All of the mystery and terror of Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill's 2013 creation is sadly lost in 'Sinister 2', an ambitious but deeply flawed and formulaic sequel to the interesting but similarly flawed original. Once again following the mythology of the Marilyn Manson-esque child-taking demon Bhuguul, 'Sinister 2' tells the story of the young former deputy of the first film (James Ransone) who has taken it upon himself to rid the world of the monstrous entity. On his travels he meets Shannyn Sossamon's single mother Courtney and her two young sons; the youngest of which has - in typical 'Sinister' fashion - found a box of grimy Super 8 snuff films which catalogue the brutal executions of a number of families.

Director Ciaran Foy clearly has an eye for horror and 'Sinister 2' really does it's best to build a palpable sense of threat and danger throughout it's overlong running time. But every single one of the the elements that were so subtly effective in the first film are simply recycled without a hint of invention and are shown far too much to be remotely scary in this one and, as a result, the movie is incredibly boring to watch. The once creepy Babadook-y Bhuguul is now nothing more than a slightly comical side character while the disturbing homemade aesthetic of the Super 8 films of the original are now overblown and quite ridiculous 'Saw'-esque exercises in excess and revulsion.
