Me Before You

 ME BEFORE YOU

Director : Thea Sharrock
Year : 2016
Genre : Romantic drama
Rating : **

Based on Jojo Moyes' best selling 2012 novel of the same name, 'Me Before You' is a soppy and manipulative romantic drama that in it's cynical attempts to make it's audience cry, disgracefully mishandles a plot surrounding the all-too pertinent themes of disability and assisted suicide. Emilia Clarke stars as Lou, a timid yet chatty young girl who after losing her beloved job in an up scale coffee shop takes on the demanding role of carer (and later lover) for Sam Claflin's ('The Hunger Games') irrepressibly snobby quadriplegic Will who continually revels in mocking her dress sense and even her taste in film - leading me to wish that the motorbike accident which landed the pr*ck in the wheelchair had rather killed him instead. Despite a likably goofy central performance from the luminous Clarke and a nice brief supporting turn from her fellow 'Game Of Thrones' alumni Charles Dance, 'Me Before You' severely lacks the knowledge of it's central subject matter resulting in a predictably sappy finale that has none of the power or emotion that a film of this kind so clearly deserves. Pembroke looks very nice though.
