After the catastrophic car-crashes that were 'The Happening', 'The Lady In The Water' and most notoriously 'The Last Airbender', it's going to take a lot for the movie-going public to forgive the once critically lauded M. Night Shyamalan and while his latest offering 'The Visit' may not completely repent for his sins, it is most certainly a step in the right direction. Telling the story of two grandchildren who spend the week with their increasingly erratic grandparents, 'The Visit' manages to generate a lot of suspense and conversely laugh out loud humour thanks to Shyalaman's witty screenplay and the believable performances from it's largely unknown but very talented cast. Olivia DeJonge and especially Ed Oxenbould are great fun as the inquisitive kids who quickly realise they are staying in a madhouse while Deanna Dunagan and Peter McRobbie are incredibly creepy as the secretive and clearly disturbed grandparents. It's daft, it's preposterous and it's wildly entertaining - an adjective that hasn't been used about an M. Night Shyamalan movie for a very long time. And if anyone says they were able to guess the trademark Shyamalan twist, they're lying!
