The second entry in the hugely popular dystopian sci-fi series by James Dashner, 'The Maze Runner : The Scorch Trials' sees the survivors of the Glade traversing their way through unconvincing CGI apocalyptic landscapes while evading the wrath of W.C.K.D as well as the grisly zombie-like monsters that haunt the expansive sunburnt terrain having succumbed to the dreaded flare virus. Much like 'Insurgent', 'The Maze Runner : The Scorch Trials' ups the action and computer generated spectacle but unlike it's superior counterpart, it makes the fatal flaw of dispensing with any character development whatsoever; meaning that anything that happens on screen (for me) lacks any sense of threat or even interest. Director Wes Ball certainly has an eye for icky set pieces (the 12A BBFC certification is pushed to it's absolute limits) but sadly a distinct absence of drive or empathy towards its protagonists severely detracts from what is already a very typical dystopian thriller that fails to stand out among the ever-growing crowd of young adult book to film adaptations.
