My Top 10 Superhero Movies

MY TOP 10 SUPERHERO MOVIES

If there is one universal complaint lobbied against the cinema of today is that it is predominantly made up of big budget blockbuster superhero movies - movies that are clearly made for a younger audience and not made for the more seasoned cinema veteran who grew up during the golden age. Newspaper columns, internet articles and general word of mouth continually decry the artistic validity of the mega-budget blockbuster and while some less strict critics see them as the fun, entertaining popcorn fodder they are clearly intended to be, many high-brow voices view them as a seemingly never-ending trend of CGI filled money-makers that lack story, character or ambition that just refuses to wane.

It may be true that the multiplexes are continually filled throughout the Summer with at least one superhero movie - hell, we even three coming out this Summer within a few weeks of each other. But whether we like it or not, they form a huge majority of the vertebrae of Hollywood and no matter how bad the reviews, there will always be an audience desperate to see the next cinematic spectacle. In my opinion, that makes them just as artistically valid as the next Oscar winning independent drama or small-budgeted foreign documentary and I for one welcome any movie that does it's utmost to entertain it's eager fans to the best of their ability.

Of course, there will always be trends in cinema. The 50's had the science fiction thriller, The 60's had the Western, the 80's had the slasher and now the 10's have the superhero movie. Trends are a natural  cycle in the movie world and I am sure that soon enough, the superhero blockbuster will begin to atrophy as the next profitable genre begins to become reliable box office gold. But be sure, there is no sign of that yet....

So, in honour of the release of the worldwide smash 'Avengers : Age Of Ultron', I am counting my top 10 superhero movies of all time.
