MY TOP 10 SLASHER MOVIES

Despised and vilified by critics, parental groups, religious leaders and feminists alike for decades, the slasher movie has been and is still seen to be Hollywoods dirty little secret; a dark, depraved and gory underworld of sex, violence and debauchery that is sure to corrupt anyone who watches them. Featuring a large majority of some of the most controversial movies ever made, the subgenre has provided cinema with some of it's most violent, disturbing and upsetting images and at one point in time, many of the more vicious examples were legally banned in the UK and the US.

However, whether people like it or not, slasher movies are one of, if not the most important, beloved and lucrative subgenres in the history of horror and have continually succeeded at the box office - with many franchises such as 'A Nightmare On Elm Street', 'Friday The 13th' and 'Scream' grossing nearly $300m worldwide. For a horror fan like me, slasher movies continue to remain a key ingredient in my bloody diet and despite what critics such as Mary Whitehouse, Roger Ebert or Vincent Canby said so often (sometimes without ever watching them), they can provide us with reliable scares, a healthy dose of adrenaline and above all and most importantly, a great deal of fun.

To celebrate the release of the remake of 'The Town That Dreaded Sundown', here is my personal picks of the ten best slasher movies ever made.
