From the blood stained beaches of the D-Day landings to the abject horror of the Holocaust, cinematic adaptations of the many events of World War II have provided audiences with some of the most shocking, horrifying and upsetting scenes ever put to film. Ever since it began back in 1939, filmmakers have had a morbid fascination with the atrocities committed by the Nazis and the best efforts of the allied forces to bring them down and as a result, World War II movies have been a reliable source for box office success.

From animated tragedies to slapstick satirical comedies, World War II has been portrayed in hundreds of movies and in dozens of different ways and tones.
