Tammy

 TAMMY

Director : Ben Falcone
Year : 2014
Genre : Comedy
Rating : **

Thanks her standout role in Paul Feigs' hilarious 'Bridesmaids', comedian Melissa McCarthy has been somewhat typecast over the past few years playing loud, brash and profane women in films such as 'Identity Thief' and 'The Heat'. And now 'Tammy', the latest comedy to feature the Southern star does nothing to shake off this sadly generic stereotype. Directed by her husband Ben Falcone, McCarthy plays the titular Tammy, a recently fired fast food worker who goes on a road trip with her alcoholic grandmother (Susan Sarandon) to escape her various woes. Along the way, she meets a number of unfunny characters and ends up in a heaping helping of desperately tired scenarios. To be fair, McCarthy is an incredibly engaging screen presence and 'Tammy' perfectly showcases her undeniably likable personality. But a dull story and a distinct lack of consistent jokes lend the film a dour and tired tone and not even a supporting cast which includes Sandra Oh, Toni Collette, Dan Akroyd and Kathy Bates can do much to change the situation.
