My Top 10 Movies Of 2017

MY TOP 10 MOVIES OF 2017

It is hard to believe that another year has come and gone so quickly and as tradition dictates, it is time once again to look back at the very best films of 2017. And my God, what a year it has been. Not since 2013 has there been such a plethora of terrific movies on offer to cinema lovers and picking my ten favourites has never been harder. In fact, there was at one point, there were 27 movies in contention for my final list and it still pains me that several couldn't make it into the countdown.

To prove just how brilliant this year has been, here is a sample of the movies that didn't make it into the final 10 :

'Split'
'War For The Planet Of The Apes'
'Raw'
'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2'
'Moonlight'
'Denial'
'Spider-Man Homecoming'
'Jackie'
'Baby Driver'
'John Wick : Chapter 2'
'Prevenge'
'Colossal'
'The Founder'
'Thor: Ragnarok'
'La La Land'
'Hidden Figures'
'Wonder Woman'

All great movies and all worthy of a place on a list of the best of 2017. However, luckily for me, I saw 10 that were even better. Without further ado, here are my picks for the very best movies of the year.

10) IT - Andy Muschietti's highly entertaining adaptation of Stephen King's beloved 1986 horror classic boasts expert direction, terror and laughs in equal measure as well as a barnstorming central performance from Bill Skarsgard as the child-eating clown Pennywise.

9) THE DISASTER ARTIST - James Franco's hilarious and poignant account of the making of 'The Room' is easily the funniest movie of 2017.

8) MY LIFE AS A COURGETTEClaude Barras' touching stop-motion drama may only be an hour long but it contains more emotion and heart than 99% of the other films released this year.

7) MOTHER!All at once enthralling, bewildering, intoxicating, disgraceful, funny and completely irredeemable, Darren Aronofsky's allegorical fantasia is one of the boldest artistic expressions of the 21st century.

6) THE RED TURTLESumptous animation and beautiful music combine to startlingly moving effect in this silent Studio Ghibli masterpiece.

5) GET OUTJordan Peele's explosive horror debut is rich in scares, laughs and razor-sharp social satire.

4) PADDINGTON 2 - Everyone's favourite marmalade-loving bear returns in this utterly delightful sequel to the 2015 family gem.

3) LOGAN - James Mangold sends Hugh Jackmans adamantium-clawed superhero off in the most suitably brutal blaze of glory.

2) DETROITWill Poulter deserves serious Oscar consideration for his terrifying supporting role in Kathryn Bigelow's incendiary historical drama.

1) A MONSTER CALLS - J.A Bayona's relentlessly heartbreaking adaptation of Patrick Ness' popular story is easily the most moving, most beautiful and most contemplative watch of 2017.

And there you have it, the very films 2017 had to offer. Will 2018 be as great, who knows? With upcoming releases such as 'Ladybird', 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri', 'The Shape Of The Water', 'Deadpool 2', 'Avengers : Infinity Wars', 'The Irishman', 'Jurassic World : Fallen Kingdom', 'Isle Of Dogs', 'The Incredibles II', 'Ready Player One' and 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote' to name just a few, it could very well be.
