Snatched

SNATCHED

Director : Jonathan Levine
Year : 2017
Genre : Comedy
Rating : **

Comedienne-of-the-moment Amy Schumer and screen legend Goldie Hawn star as a mother and daughter in peril in 'Snatched', Jonathan Levine's raunchy and rambunctious buddy-comedy that like much of Schumer's work contains more references to the female anatomy than the walls of a gynaecologists waiting room. In a role almost identical to that of her boozy character from 2015's superior 'Trainwreck', Schumer plays the outrageous Emily who begrudgingly invites her cat-loving Mum Linda to join her on vacation in Ecuador, promising that they'll "put the fun in non-refundable". Unfortunately for us however, there is little fun to be had in a very predictable plot which sees Emily and Linda become the target of a bunch of brutish South American thugs who promptly kidnap them and hold them to ransom.

Hawn, who hasn't appeared on the big screen since 2002's 'The Banger Sisters' still looks stunning for her age and to her credit, she is by far the funniest thing in 'Snatched', delivering Katie Dippold's increasingly crude dialogue with a penache and vigour that can't help but raise a smile. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for her resolutely unfunny and unlikeable co-star Amy Schumer (or as I like to call her, Melissa McHardly) whose over-reliance on sexual and lavatorial humour quickly wears thin. 'Snatched' isn't a terrible comedy but it is absolutely not the triumphant comeback fans of the 'Private Benjamin' icon were waiting for.
