The Angry Birds Movie

THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE

Directors : Clay Kaytis & Fergal Reilly
Year : 2016
Genre : Animation
Rating : **1/2

This brightly coloured yet highly derivitive big-screen adaptation of the popular birds vs. pigs app doesn't hit the heights of 'Inside Out', 'The LEGO Movie' or 'Big Hero 6' but still manages to perfectly pass the time without annoying or offending - much like the game itself. Jason Sudeikis voices Red, a very temperamental and unpopular bird who with the help of his fellow anger management classmates Chuck ('Frozen's Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride) must uncover the truth about the egg-loving porky intruders who have unexpectedly turned up on their island. With a pun-filled script courtesy of 'The Simpsons' writer Jon Vitti and stuffed with pop-culture heavy sight gags - Kevin Bacon, Green Eggs And Ham and even piglet versions of 'The Shining' twins all make fleeting appearances - 'The Angry Birds Movie' doesn't go out of its way to explore themes or moral issues but simply exists to give kids an innocent laugh and in that respect, it succeeds. The animation is nicely done, the characters are likeable, the plot is easy to follow and the bird-slinging finale perfectly emulates the technicolored chaos of the game. Its not the golden goose I was hoping for but it's not a total turkey either.
