After her simply dreadful turn as Sue Storm in the odious 'Fant4stic', Kate Mara regains some of her dignity by delivering a fine performance in the involving yet uninspired 'Captive', the big screen yet undeniably televisual adaptation of Ashley Smith's religiously inflected bestseller that told the true story of a recovering meth addict who found herself held hostage by a violent criminal but sought redemption in the pages of Rick Warren's 'The Purpose Driven Life'. 'Selma's David Oyewolo shines as the unstable lawbreaker while a strong supporting performance from 'The Wire's Michael K. Williams lends the picture a touch of quiet class. However, the perfectly normal script by Brian Bird and the overall lack of story betrays the fact that there really isn't much to warrant a full length feature here - despite a pleading coda featuring the overly zealous Oprah Winfrey clearly included to justify its existence.
