We Are What We Are

WE ARE WHAT WE ARE

Director : Jim Mickle
Year : 2014
Genre : Horror
Rating : ***1/2

Based on Jorge Michel Grau's 2010 Mexican movie of the same name, 'We Are What We Are' is a disturbing and for the most part effective horror film from writer/director Jim Mickle whose work also includes the 2006 zombie fest 'Mulberry Street' and the 2010 vampire/zombie combo 'Stake Land'. Starring Bill Sages, Julia Garner, Ambyr Childers and Kelly McGillis, 'We Are What We Are' tells the story of a family of ritualistic cannibals who, after the death of their mother are forced to adapt and find new ways of hunting down and killing people while avoiding being found out by their curious and suspicious neighbours.

Changing the original ideologies of it's predecessor by a significant amount, Mickle tranposes the text of Grau's grisly independent shocker and turns it into a tome on religion and the importance of family and while it may lack the grime and the utter dread of Grau's sadly under appreciated opus, 'We Are What We Are' makes up for these losses with a strong screenplay written by Mickle and regular collaborator Nick Dimici, diverse and strong performances from it's lead cast and enough blood and gore to satisfy the cravings of any true horror fan. Scary, disturbing and highly watchable, 'We Are What We Are' is sure to gain a cult following in the near future thanks to it's simultaneous distribution as well as the praise of many prolific film magazines such as 'Empire' and 'Fangoria'.
