Sonic The Hedgehog

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG

Director : Jeff Fowler
Year : 2020
Genre : Animation
Rating : **1/2

After 29 years headlining games of, let's charitably say, varying quality, SEGA's iconic blue blur is given the big screen treatment in 'Sonic The Hedgehog' - a movie that, much like his plethora of video games, is fairly unremarkable and forgettable but is undoubtedly entertaining with enough high-speed action and cheeky pop-culture humour to substantially fill the time. Set in the idyllic town of Green Hills, the movie sees the titular rodent joins forces with the local town sheriff (James Marsden) to retrieve his lost rings and thwart the evil plans of the crazed tech-genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Storywise and character wise, 'Sonic The Hedgehog' isn't exactly brimming with genre-defining imagination and while kids will definitely enjoy this speedy little adventure, there really isn't much for adults here beyond the numerous nostalgic Easter Eggs scattered throughout it's zippy running time. However, the film is kept moving at a steady pace thanks to Jim Carrey who is delightfully daft in his villainous role as the hyper-intelligent Robotnik while Sonic himself, brought to life by great vocal work from comedian Ben Schwartz and with CGI that is far superior to that seen in the films notoriously terrifying original trailer, has more than enough charm and one-liners to raise a chuckle or two.
