The LEGO Movie 2 : The Second Part

THE LEGO MOVIE 2 : THE SECOND PART

Director : Mike Mitchell
Year : 2019
Genre : Animation
Rating : ***1/2

5 years after being snubbed for an Academy Award nomination, Emmet, Lucy, Batman, Unikitty and Benny return to the big screen for 'The LEGO Movie 2 : The Second Part', a colourful and often highly amusing animated sequel that may not quite stack up against it's awesome 2014 original but has more than enough jokes, charm and heart to make it a delightfully silly box of tricks. Having overcome the wicked schemes of Lord Business in the previous film, Emmet (Chris Pratt) and the gang must now embark on a whole new adventure to prevent the complete annihilation of their world by destructive Duplo invaders. Teaming up with a host of new characters, our heroes traverse the dangerous perils of the Sistar system to thwart the plans of the shape-shifting villainess Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi (Tiffany Haddish) and prevent the impending ''Armamaggedon''.

As was also the case with the first film, 'The LEGO Movie 2' boasts consistently dazzling computer graphics and the voice cast which also includes Will Arnett, Charlie Day, Elizabeth Banks, Nick Offerman and even British talent such as Richard Ayoade and Noel Fielding all do terrifically funny work; particularly Arnett whose quick-witted and ever-brooding Batman once again steals the show. There are even a couple of new and catchy tunes that should keep audiences feet tapping long after the hilarious end credits sequence finishes. However, while the film looks and sounds wonderful, what is notably missing from 'The LEGO Movie 2' is that sense of freshness and unrestrained weirdness that previous directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (who now serve as key screenwriters) brought which made the first picture such an instant classic. Still, there are more than enough gags both visual and spoken as well as a number of highly kinetic action sequences to keep audiences both giggling and enraptured for it's entire running time. Funny, heartwarming and endlessly inventive, 'The Lego Movie 2' may not be as good as it's predecessor but it is nonetheless a very enjoyable film that should easily entertain the little ones (and maybe even some of the bigger ones) this Half Term.
