My Bottom 10 Movies of 2018

MY BOTTOM 10 MOVIES OF 2018

Before we say a long-overdue farewell to the time-fart that was 2018, let's have a quick look back at the films that made one of the worst years in recent history that little 1worse. As I mentioned in my last post, I visited the cinema far fewer times this year than previous years so there are bound to be some truly dreadful movies that should be on this list but aren't due to the fact that I didn't see them. Of course, it's all subjective and there are some films included here that you may love. Variety of opinion is a wonderful thing and I welcome debate in the comments section below. But just so you know in advance, I really hated these movies! Let's give these cinematic abominations one more kick in the goolies.

10) 'SOLO : A STAR WARS STORY' -

While Alden Ehrenreich did a fine job stepping into the shoes of one of cinemas most iconic heroes, Ron Howard's dreary sci-fi prequel lacks any of the magic or wonder that made the increasingly divisive 'Star Wars' saga so enjoyable. An inessential product of studio interference.

9) 'VENOM' -

No thrills. No spills. No tension. No scares. No Spider-Man. No point.

8) 'JURASSIC WORLD : FALLEN KINGDOM' -

I may have given it a favourable review at first but J.A Bayona's lumpen sci-fi sequel really doesn't hold up to repeat viewings. Uninteresting and downright stupid characters and a plot with more holes than a swiss cheese factory make this one of 2018's most disappointing cinematic experiences.

7) 'PETER RABBIT' -

James Corden voicing one of British literature's most beloved figures - what could go wrong? Answer, everything! Something is clearly wrong when a movie based on Beatrix Potter makes you root for the humans instead of the animals.

6) 'DOWNSIZING' -

Director Alexander Payne may have made some great movies in the past such as 'Nebraska' and 'Sideways' but sadly, this intriguing yet misguided sci-fi offering is not one of them. A great premise ruined by lacklustre execution and a painfully forced romantic subplot.

5) 'THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX' -

It may have had an ingenious marketing campaign but this dreadful straight-to-Netflix horror/thriller wasn't worth the paper it was written on. A hugely talented star cast pours more salt into the wound.

4) 'GRINGO' -

A comedy film so unfunny and so forgettable that I couldn't recall it's plot even after leaving the cinema. I love David Oyelowo but with both 'Gringo' and the aforementioned 'The Cloverfield Paradox' under his belt this year, he really needs a new casting agent.

3) 'TRUTH OR DARE' -

Very simply, I wouldn't dare my worst enemy to watch this painfully derivative and unintentionally hilarious teen slasher from the usually reliable Blumhouse horror factory.

2) 'FIFTY SHADES FREED' -

What is there really left to say? The odious 'Fifty Shades' trilogy may finally be over but it's lacerating mental scars will take a very long time to heal.

1) 'WINCHESTER' -

What could possibly be worse than a 'Fifty Shades' movie? A promising horror movie loaded with talent in front of and behind the camera that manages to both bore and infuriate in equal measure for a start. Dame Helen Mirren's first foray into the genre sees the veteran actress hamming it up to porcine levels in this turgid and cliche-ridden spookfest from The Spierig Brothers that manages to waste a fascinating true story with overdone conventions, lacklustre thrills and a plot so hackneyed and trite that it almost resembles a parody. I love horror movies but there are few things worse than a horror than fails to scare on any level whatsoever. Congratulations 'Winchester', you were the absolute worst movie I saw in 2018.
