A Simple Favour

A SIMPLE FAVOUR

Director : Paul Feig
Year : 2018
Genre : Thriller
Rating : ****

If director Paul Feig needed to erase the fallout caused by his controversially chromosomed reboot of 'Ghostbusters', then 'A Simple Favour' is a pretty good way to start. A far cry from his usual brand of female-led comedy, this delightfully dark adaptation of Darcey Bell's 2017 novel is a twisty and sometimes twisted thriller that sees the filmmaker flexing his wings and exploring strange new territory to surprisingly effective and entertaining results. A curious hybrid of 'Gone Girl' and 'Single White Female', the movie sees Anna Kendrick as a young widowed mother who is unwittingly drawn into the mystery surrounding her unstable friend's (Blake Lively) sudden disappearance.

As the emotional centre of the film, Kendrick is pitch perfect - delivering a career-best performance that displays the same girl-next-door buoyancy and charm that has made her one of cinemas brightest stars. However, it is  the beautiful Blake Lively who steals the show with her martini- swilling, foul-mouthed characterisation that embodies all of the traits of a classic cinema femme fatale; sultry and sexy yet undeniably dangerous and secretive. With a consistent tone that effortlessly balances intrigue with jet-black humour and a finale that is sure to keep audiences guessing 'til the very end, 'A Simple Favour' is one of the true unexpected surprises of the 2018; seductive as a cocktail yet pointed as a stiletto heel.
