Despite it's miserable 'Hangover'-like marketing campaign,  Jon Lucas and Scott Moore's deceptively titled comedy 'Bad Moms' was a very funny and quite touching Midsummer treat that managed to blend R-rated gags with a great deal of heart and emotion making it one of, if not the biggest surprise of 2015. Now two years later, the same filmmakers and primary cast return for this sporadically entertaining yet utterly unnecessary seasonal sequel that is unfortunately everything I feared the first 'Bad Moms' film was going to be - loud, raucous and crucially, not very funny at all. Once again Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn return as the eponymous trio of overburdened Moms who have to deal with the many trials and tribulations of Christmastime as well as having to put up with their own overbearing mothers (Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines and Susan Sarandon).

At times, 'A Bad Moms Christmas' manages to maintain the heart and charm that made it's predecessor so unexpectedly great and once again, Mila Kunis is very likable and charismatic in the central role of Amy, one of the three long-suffering mothers. However, as is usually the case with inferior comedy sequels, the charm is bought down and the vulgarisms and profanity are cranked up to frankly ridiculous levels. There is a little respite from the swearing and sex jokes as the film reaches it's saccharinely sweet finale but it isn't enough to wash the bad taste of the previous 90 minutes worth of unfunny set pieces, annoying characters and mean-spirited hijinks out of our mouths. It's nowhere near as horrible as last years catastrophic 'Bad Santa 2' but in the wake of it's far superior predecessor, 'A Bad Moms Christmas' is a crushing yuletide disappointment.
