Bridget Jones's Baby

BRIDGET JONES'S BABY

Director : Sharon Maguire
Year : 2016
Genre : Comedy
Rating : ***

Twelve years after finally finding true love, Helen Fielding's beloved comic creation returns to the big screen with 'Bridget Jones's Baby', a fun yet underwhelming threequel that certainly improves on the terrible shark-jumping nonsense of 2004's 'Bridget Jones : Edge Of Reason' but doesn't reach either the comedic or emotional heights of it's Academy Award nominated original. After dodging a bullet by not helming the second movie, 'Bridget Jones's Diary's Sharon Maguire once again steps into the directors chair and Renee Zellweger once again stars as the titular Jones who after a casual fling while on a camping trip finds herself up the duff. The only problem is she doesn't know who the father is.

Franchise regular Colin Firth returns as the snooty yet loving lawyer Mark Darcy while 'Grey's Anatomy's Patrick Dempsey stars as Jack, a handsome and charming American love guru who sweeps Bridget off her feet - both of whom could be the Daddy. The paternal rivalry between the two does make for some good laughs while Zellweger is once again great as the ditzy yet delightful Bridget. But as I mentioned earlier, the laughs just aren't as consistent as they were in the first film which still remains one of the best British comedies made in the past 25 years. However, the movie has one saving grace in the form of the ever- terrific Emma Thompson who is absolutely wonderful as a sarky obstetrician. It may be a mere coincidence that Thompson, who also serves as screenwriter, has many of 'Bridget Jones's Baby's best lines but whether its vanity or not, she makes the film almost unmissable. Almost.
