The Huntsman : Winter's War

THE HUNTSMAN : WINTER'S WAR

Director : Cedric Nicolas - Troyans
Year : 2016
Genre : Fantasy
Rating : *1/2

This dour follow-up to 2012's underwhelming fantasy retread 'Snow White & The Hunstman' cheekily leeches themes and ideas from 'The Chronicles Of Narnia' movies and Disney's smash hit 'Frozen' but fails to be half as interesting as either. With previous star Kristen Stewart out of the picture, Chris Hemsworth now takes centre stage as the eponymous soldier Eric who, after incurring the wrath of the frosty ice queen Freya (Emily Blunt) by illegally falling in love with a fellow huntsmen (a 'Scottish?' Jessica Chastain), is charged by an unseen Snow White to recover the fabled mirror that has been stolen from her. Very little makes sense in this dreary and, at times utterly incoherent mash-up that sees Hemsworth trampling his way through unconvincing CGI landscapes while the usually brilliant Emily Blunt mopes around doing her best White Witch/Elsa impression. Not even the prescence of a bunch of comedic dwarves, played by Nick Frost, Ron Brydon, Sheridan Smith and Alexandra Roach, can lighten the mood of this irrepressibly dull and instantly forgettable film that severely lacks the one thing all fantasies should innately have - magic.
