The Divergent Series : Allegiant

THE DIVERGENT SERIES : ALLEGIANT

Director : Robert Schwentke
Year : 2016
Genre : Science Fiction
Rating : **

After the vast improvements made by last years 'Insurgent', the 'Divergent' series once again slips into mundanity with 'Allegiant', the third and, sadly, worst entry in the continuing cinematic adaptation of Veronica Roth's popular dystopian novels. Taking place after the climatic events of 'Insurgent', 'Allegiant' once again focuses on the trials and tribulations of Shailene Woodley's level-headed Tris who has now scaled the Chicago wall and fallen into the scheming claws of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare and it's leader David (Jeff Daniels) whose talk of pure-bloods, damaged individuals, failed experiments and a factionless world hides less-than-subtle ulterior motives. As always, Woodley provides a charismatic and dependable lead while Miles Teller is once again great as the slimy and manipulative Peter. However, a dependence in 'Tomorrowland'-esque CGI landscapes lend 'Allegiant' a distinctly artificial aesthetic while the promising character development and narrative drive of it's superior predecessor has now been replaced with bland, repetitive action sequences and overlong, expositional claptrap. There is still one more movie on the horizon but it can't help but feel that this is a series that has already outstayed it's welcome.
