Le Quattro Volte

LE QUATTRO VOLTE

Year Of Release : 2011
Director : Michaelangelo Frammartino
Genre : Drama
Rating : *****

At the end of every year, there are always a few things that I always look forward to, besides the obvious festivities. One of these is the Mark Kermode 'Top 10 Of The Year', and last year's list provided me with some of the greatest movies I have ever seen. Some of these were 'Senna', 'We Need To Talk About Kevin', 'Hugo' 'Melancholia' and 'Kill List'. However, number 2 on his list was 'Le Quattro Volte', which he referred to as 'The Italian silent goat - farming movie'. This description doesn't exactly make the film sound riveting, but it is not only one of the best movies of last year, but one of the best I have ever seen.
The narrative is not exactly conventional, and instead of a straight linear storyline, the movie is split into several episodes, depicting life in a small Italian village and the way that different life forms help to keep it running smoothly. These include a goatherder and his goats, a tree and charcoal. The title 'Le Quattro Volte' means 'The Four Turns', which refers to the Pythagorus contention that to discover what to be human is completely about, we must understand and experience the fact that we have four lives within us those of animal, vegetable, mineral and human. This may sound spiritual, but the movie isn't actually very significant that way. It is rather about how one lifeform can completely change their habitat, environment and community all around them.

To be honest, there is not much I can say about this film. There is no storyline or characters to become attached to, but the way the film is made and shot makes it so extraordinary. It really makes you as a viewer question what it is to be human, and how we as a race can change the environment around us. All I will say is if you love film, and are not restricted as so many people seem to be these days of either a silent or a foreign film, you  should really check out 'Le Quattro Volte', there is other movie like it.
