SERENITY

He may have earned awards and critical plaudits for his terrific work over the past 10 years of cinema but with the release of 'Serenity', Matthew McConaughey's meteoric rise has finally plummeted back down to Earth with an audible snigger. Following on from the trio of box-office bombs that were 'Gold', 'Free State Of Jones' and most recently, 'The Dark Tower', 'Serenity' sees the one-time rom-com mainstay turned Academy Award winner delivering his worst performance in quite some time and, in the process, driving home the final rusty nail in the coffin of what the media once dubbed the ''McConaissance''.  Part 'Moby Dick', part erotic thriller and all garbage, 'Serenity' tells the hugely underwhelming story of a chainsmoking, rum swigging tuna fisherman (McConaughey) who is tasked by his ex-wife (Anne Hathaway) to murder her abusive new husband (Jason Clarke). For the most part, the film is just merely boring, with the entirety of the cast delivering director/screenwriter Steven Knight's dialogue with all the enthusiasm of a secondary school supply teacher. However, it is when the movie reaches it's stupendously stupid third act that 'Serenity'  reveals it's nonsensical ''twist'' and firmly stamps it's place as one of the absolute worst movies of the entire decade. Bewilderingly bad in almost every conceivable manner, 'Serenity' is surely destined to stand alongside 'Troll 2', 'Birdemic : Shock & Terror' and 'The Room' in the pantheons of cinema's most calamitous disasterpieces.
